Some more progress on my blocks for One Quilt....
The latest block is courtesy of Nanette, the master of the wonky log cabin..... I love the way she makes her blocks - completely random and free form.....
I'm hand quilting the blocks - I'm using a quilt as you go method that means I can quilt each block individually before I sew them all together - this makes everything FAR more manageable.... I'll try and post a tutorial once I get to the piecing stage, but for now, all I have to do is sandwich the batting between the block and a sqaure of backing fabric, baste and then quilt away - perfect for couch potato telly watching.....
Each square is taking on its own personality - the shape of the piecing is really accented by the stitching, and I've got to say, the texture of hand quilting is so unique and lovely - I'm all for doing whatever you can on the machine, but if you can devote the time, the hand work is well worth the effort...
There's something so satisfying about the methodical stitching, learning the technique, getting the stitches closer and closer together - even the callouses on the ends of my fingers are satisfying!
Now all I have to do is come up with some designs for the alternating white squares....eeek!

So Beautiful, I love the crispness of the oranges and white!
Wow, these look fantastic with that wonderful freehand stitching and yay that you are documenting the process. This is truly going to be an extraordinary quilt.
xx
Please Please show us how you put it all together - the quilt I started using quilt-as-you-go some time ago, is still waitng to be completed and I am a bit lost so would love to see how you tackle it.
It all looks so amazing... I love the wonky random red square. It's just beautiful.
How do you attach all the blocks together at the end?
that pinwheel block is divine.
I see you'll be needing some feedsack.
So gorgeous, can't wait to see the finished product.
They are so beautiful! I never tried handquilting by this is definately inspiring.
I used "quilt as you go" method on the table runners once, but I can't imagine using it on the quilt. Tutorial will be awesome.
Happy Thanksgiving!
yeah, the look gorgeous but i'm a bit confused as to how you sew it all together at the end without seams on one side... what am i missing here, leah? i must know : )
WOW!! frickin beautiful
jus xx
are you right or left handed? i'm guessing that your calloused fingers are from the hand that feels for the needle underneath the quilt. but just incase, i hope you're using a thimble!
i wear mine on my middle finger. (i use the leather variety with a metal tip where the needle rests)
if you till get blood blisters from the other hand when your needle pokes in and out... you might consider wrapping the tip of your finger with some electrical tape.
but maybe thickened callouses are all that are required. :)
and by the way... your hand quilting is very lovely. :)
Inspiring! Really looking forward to seeing this finished, and as a work in prgress.
No leopard print from Nannette??!!
Love the ramdom style.

I saw your Nongs in the Sunday Mail today! I thought 'I know those Nongs!' It's a great photo in good company.
Congratulations!

These quilts are gorgeous!!
i'm with leslie. can you explain how you'll piece this all together? i don't understand!
hey old friend!!! long time since my last visit!!!! this is an awesome looking quilt!!! love the colors!
Oh my dear! I know what you need for those sore fingers... it's a soft leather "thimble" with a bit of elastic - it takes the bite of the needle and allows you quilt much longer... you can get it at Joannes or anyplace with sewing supplies. Saved my life when I was quilting. found you on a link from my friend "Bitter Betty" - very nice! Lindy
very nice quilts! Funny....i am just finishing a red and white one and am working on another - the same one you are (the second one).
That first quilt (the red one) is looking to be like one of the coolest quilts I have ever seen!
The other ones are great, too...but that red one. MAN O MAN.
this is seriously amazing!
you always inspire me to start quilting again
